When I watched Girls, by the time I was halfway through the second season, I hated her character. I thought she was the most entitled, stubborn, impulsive, oblivious, self-centered fool imaginable. Then I realized: that’s probably the point. She was fat, awkward, unlikable, and still the main character, which, in itself is a feat. It seems every fat girl on tv is a shy sidekick who experiences romantic live vicariously. Lack of diversity aside, because I think it’s about what the writer actually sees in their experience and I’m sure there are black people in Brooklyn, but if they’re in your peripheral vision, then they won’t end up in your show, it was not a bad show.

Dunham the person, though? Probably unlikable as well, though I think being big makes her far more of a target because we live in a fatphobic and misogynist world.
